Apéro & Grossesse

Aperitif & Pregnancy

It's summer, it's hot, it's nice, and invitations are multiplying in the evenings and on weekends: "Are you coming for an aperitif?" Oh yes, we want that aperitif, a cheese/cold meats board with a glass of wine or a good pint! But here you are, you are pregnant, and perhaps you will be in one of the following situations:

  1. the pregnancy has not yet been announced, and you still want to keep it a secret to this day
  2. everyone knows about the upcoming arrival of your little wonder, but you know your good-natured friends... And you're not sure you'll find a pregnancy-compatible refreshment (ooooh and we know, the list of prohibitions is long!)

In both cases, pretending to be a little tired and not going is not always an option! So how can you enjoy aperitifs this summer? Here is a little practical guide!

The little phrases that save

There are some nice ways to say no to a drink, like: "Thanks, I'll start with this soda", "Do you have something alcohol-free? It's more refreshing!", "I brought this juice that I thought was original, does anyone want to try it with me?" Quick, effective, except maybe when you have girlfriends who are on the lookout for this kind of news ;)

Do the service!

At your friends' place, take matters into your own hands and serve! What you serve yourself will often go unnoticed!

At home, why not help yourself before your guests arrive. It's not the most polite thing in the world, we grant you! But at least when they arrive, your glass is full and, since only one bottle of beer/wine/rosé (delete as appropriate) is open, it does the trick!

Get your other half involved

If you don't want people to notice that you're not drinking alcohol, ask your other half to discreetly drink your drink - a tried and tested method for an aperitif with my in-laws - or ask them to have a soft drink and discreetly swap your two glasses!

A sweet word to the server

On the terrace, have a different cocktail from the others (otherwise it won't work as well ;)) and then pretend to go to the toilet. Take the opportunity to go discreetly to the bar and specify that you want a virgin cocktail.

Well, let's not hide it, for it to work well the waiter must not make a mistake "And the mojito is friiiiiiight??? A Virgin, is that it, Madam?!" so put him in the loop too!

Finally, if you are asked if you are having something else, answer that one cocktail is enough for you (you are driving, you have an important meeting the next day, you are watching your consumption, etc.) and that's it!

Bring your own food

This seems pretty obvious, but bring things for the aperitif that you are entitled to. And in large enough quantities so that there is still some for you until the end of the evening - the "super good guacamole" gone in 3 minutes is also a real thing!

Dry January

Last option, pretend it's a dry January or Lent without alcohol, but we grant you, in July it doesn't work as well!

Are you lacking inspiration for your next aperitifs? We have put together a small list (not exhaustive) of nice drinks to drink while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Any other ideas?

Do you have any good ideas to share with us? Mention your best tip in the comments, we will be sure to include them here :)

Have our cocktail photos made you thirsty? We're soon preparing a list of non-alcoholic drinks that will make you doubt the alcohol content because they are so well made!
